This is what is likely to be the most exciting National Signing Day in recent memory. Check in here to see who did (or, dry heave in mouth a little, didn't) sign their letter of intent.
The big names that have everyone holding their breath are Andrus Peat (solid?), Alonzo Moore (solid?), Vincent Valentine (kinda solid?), Aaron Curry (ummm?), Devian Shelton (very shaky?).
Five for five (or even four) on these guys would be an incredible haul. Three for five is probably more likely, but if those three are Peat, Moore and Valentine, it would still be a huge day. Losing more than one of those three will result black clouds around many Husker heads. Just remember, though - if the worst should come to pass, it's still better than staring wistfully at Iowa City-area livestock, a common pastime of another certain Big 10 fanbase.
Click inside for running updates:

Leroy Alexander is "N" - letter of intent is signed
- This could be a classic case of talent pushed by hunger. This kid was off everyone's radar due to transfer & academics. He snapped up the Husker offer immediately and had that LOI in at the crack of dawn. He WANTS to be here.
Note - Someone at work asked me about Raymond Ford, it sounds as if he is no longer an option.
Note - Devian Shelton has been offered by Southern Cal. As they say on "Seinfeld", "That can't be good for business." "That can't be good for anything." Insert your "he got paid off" jokes below.
Note - Aaron Curry should be announcing in about 30 mins. or so.
Note - While we're at it, here are some other announcement times - Alonzo Moore - 9am, Devian Shelton - 11am, Andrus Peat - 12:30pm, Vincent Valentine - 1pm.
Michael Rose is "N"
- Seems like years ago that Rose reopened his recruitment. He has been arguably NU's biggest recruit-recruiter and cheerleader.
Note - Curry would be a nice start to the day, however I've always enjoyed those who talk about things like "momentum" on siging day. As if some kid would be all set to sign with Boise St., but then read on the message board that Utah's guys were all signing early and would think, "You know, they've really got momentum going today. Eff it, I'm a Ute!"
Jordan Westerkamp is "N"
- The lesson as always? Domers suck. Welcome aboard, Jordan.
Aaron Curry is "N".
- OK, what I said above about momentum? Forget it, let's hope it's totally true. Great get, he was considered 50/50, no one seemed to have any idea what he was thinking.
Greg McMullen is "N"
- Keep working that Ohio pipeline....
Note/Question - Is it possible to rub out a refresh icon on your screen by clicking it several times/minute?
Sam Cotton is "N"
- Oh thank God. This one really had me worried.
Tommy Armstrong is "N"
- A quarterback named Tommie Tommy? A last name of Armstrong? This is a stone cold lock for Husker success, is it not?
Note - Is there any correlation to kids that fire off that LOI at the crack of dawn versus those that get around to it at noon or so? Of course not, but I do love these kids that can't wait to get it in.
Note - Alonzo Moore signing is on deck. Supposedly, it's down to us, La Tech and Northwestern St. Not Northwestern. Northwestern St. If Moore is not "N", this would be a bigger upset than watching Santino Panico take a punt to the house. Or over 7 yards.
Imani Cross is "N"
- Can we stitch the word "THUMP" on the ass of his pants a la Junk Yard Dog? I love this signing, absolutely love it.
Paul Thurston is "N"
- Of course, it's always fun to snag someone out of Colorado. Sure, their program's about on a par with Transformers 3's Oscar chances, but still.
Alonzo Moore is "N"
- 2 for 2 on the signing day undecideds. Top athlete, likely ends up at CB or WR, but wants to take a shot at QB.
Note - Next on deck is Devian Shelton. At this point, his slapping on a red cap would be considered on a par with "Steve-O bags George Clooney's Smoking-hot Italian Ex-girlfriend!" Go ahead - click that link and remember that hope never dies.
"Get busy signin' or get busy dyin'. Damn right."
Note - Going for coffee and to resist the urge to claw at my left eye. I highly recommend not getting an ulcers in your eye. It's as bad as it sounds.
Note - A 1/2 hour lull on signing day seems like 3 hours. Or roughly the time it felt like it took to get through those scenes at the end of old Cheers episodes where Shelly Long would blab on endlessly in Sam's office.
Corey Whitaker is "N"
- Hah! And I unjinxed it just like that. Our first west coast kid is out of bed and downing his Golden Grahams.
Zaire Anderson is "N"
- "Anderson! Bomaye! Anderson! Bomaye!". C'mon, Rumble in the Jungle? Zaire? OK, it was a stretch.
Jared Afalava is "N"
- The linebacker corps is almost complete. Thomas Brown, where are ya'?
Thomas Brown is "N"
- OK, that's just creepy, that's twice now. I'll be sure to call for Peat & Valentine right before their announcements just in case I have the mojo going today.
"Andrus? Vincent? Lincoln, NE is totally groovy. Join Husker nation today, Yeah, baby!!"
(Please note, I made no mention of unlimited Tri Delts & AOPi's to shag. Well, almost.)
Note - OK, it's basically all over until moment of truth time. Moss will be signing about a 1/2 hour before Peat makes his announcement, and then Valentine will pick about 30 minutes after that. Unless Shelton's just been having fun with everyone, he appears to be USC bound . Anyone else would be a major surprise.
Note - The Peat Watch is in full effect. Avery Moss is in class. Insert rampant speculation about Peat's red tie, Stanford's academics or USC and Kiffin's record of rampant cheating here.
Note - Looks like Peat decision coming a few minutes early
Note - Or not. According to everyone he is lock for Nebraska, USC AND Stanford.
Note - Sounds liek ESPNU's dragging it out right now.
Peat picked Stanford. */^%##^*($!$!!!!!!
Oh, well, at least Special K and USC couldn't buy him. That would hurt much, much worse.
Vincent Valentine is on deck. Announcement ETA 1:15 or so.
Vincent Valentine is "N"!!!
- And suddenly, we are EXTREMELY deep at DT.
Avery Moss is "N"
- So those with fears of a Stanford package deal can rest easy.
That should close things out for the day. Keep your thought flying below, I'll post any more ramblings I can think of as they bounce in my head....

Do you think we'll get any surprises today?
There’s the group of 5 that everyone is talking about…but if we don’t get all 5 of those guys is there anyone else that’s a possibility?
Billgrip - February 1, 2012
NLOI DAY! NLOI DAY! NLOI DAY!
Just kidding. Who is excited about Curry, though? One down, four to go.
KennardHusker - February 1, 2012
There's plenty o' cryptic rumors out there.
But nothing remotely solid. If it happens, look for a situation like Peat last year or Carnes two years ago where there was a kid who had supposedly fallen off the radar or committed somewhere else who has actually quietly committed to the Huskers but is waiting till signing day, because they don’t want to get phone/text blasted by the school their ditching.
By many accounts, Carnes was hotboxed & guilt-tripped into comitting by his former coach at WKU. He then switched to NU but had the staff keep it quiet till signing day so WKU would leave him be.

So far, so good.
No huge surprises either direction yet. It will be interesting what happens with Shelton.
KennardHusker - February 1, 2012
Alonzo Moore says he'll start out at corner
Not really a huge surprise. Apparently his decision between Nebraska and LA Tech came down to whether he wanted to play QB or not.
I’m guessing he’ll redshirt this season and probably compete for playing time in 2014 as a sophomore when Andrew Green and Mo Seisay graduate. We need depth at that position, and I don’t think we get Shelton or Ford. Also, rumor has it that Braylon Heard is also moving to CB
Billgrip - February 1, 2012
Yep, the Heard rumor popped a few days ago..
..and is gaining legs as it appears we are out of it with both Ford & Shelton. Fairly amazing. We were after approximately 124 CB prospects and ended up with one. I’m guessing none were thrilled with the sheer numbers they’d be going up against already rostered.
Andy Ketterson - February 1, 2012
Yeah I'm shocked
Maybe it’s that Corey Raymond hasn’t proven himself as a CB coach yet? I don’t know what it is…but it’s crazy that we had arguably the best secondary in the country two years ago and now we can hardly get 3 star guys to commit.

Question:
Is Nebraska going to follow OSU lead (w/ B1G pushing) and start with 4 year scholarships this signing period?
JimmytheRed - February 1, 2012
ESPNU analyists making love to Stanford
Hopefully Andrus isn’t watching them to help make his decision.
Plus they’re cheating on USC! This is adultery on live television!
Billgrip - February 1, 2012
Just saw that.....
more analyists are picking Stanford for Peat……..makes me nervous….
Huskerinthedesert - February 1, 2012
They definitely seem to have some momentum today
Billgrip - February 1, 2012
Rivals (who are less obnoxious than the WWL) are still projecting Nebraska
KennardHusker - February 1, 2012
Thank you Kennard...
I’m def sweating it out here. I live in the Phoenix area, heard a lot about Peat and his talent (football and Basketball) Part of me hopes he has footwork like Suh! even if it’s only half as good as Suh, he’ll be a BEAST! Really pulling for more AZ kids to wear the “N”!
Huskerinthedesert - February 1, 2012
I think Bo has a lot of swing in that region
He has been consistent in the high schools and really has helped Nebraska’s AZ pipeline keep going.
With you being down in Phoenix, have you seen Peat play at all? I’ve seen highlights, and he just kind of dwarfs other high school kids. I can’t tell if he’s that much more talented or that much bigger.
KennardHusker - February 1, 2012
Just highlights on TV
But he seems to have an endless motor when he wants……seemed like when the level of opponent went down, so did his motor. Hopefully he picks N and the coaches get him fired up to knock open some holes!
Huskerinthedesert - February 1, 2012
I am nervous as well
however, I can’t blame the kid if he wants to get a degree that says “Stanford” at the top. That opens a lot of doors in the event that football doesn’t work out.
JimmytheRed - February 1, 2012
is it wrong
to think of Stanford as a bunch of nerds…..and not the cool kind either? Who wants a Tree for a mascot anyways…..LOL. Oh, I’m driving myself nuts….
Huskerinthedesert - February 1, 2012
Anymore, the americans are the rich kids
the nerd types are typically the international students. This is coming from a nerd
meatybob - February 1, 2012
I would say if he goes to Stanford it's more because of the offense than the academics
They are a true pro-style offense, and in theory he would have better NFL draft stock coming out of Stanford than Nebraska. IN THEORY
Billgrip - February 1, 2012
maybe
he just doesn’t want to be “Todd Peat’s Little Brother” at Nebraska.
Jon Johnston - February 1, 2012
He's 6'7" 280.
I don’t think him and “little” collide in the same sentence too often…

Nobody answered
my question above. Is NU doing 4 year scholly starting this signing period?
JimmytheRed - February 1, 2012
i have heard nothing
along those lines – it would shock me if they did this – if they did it would severely hamstring their ability to be competitive
Jon Johnston - February 1, 2012
It is apparently
a big push from B1G to do this. Iowa, Wisky, and OSU have apparently confirmed to the B10 Bloggers on ESPN that they are in fact doing 4 year scholarships this year.
JimmytheRed - February 1, 2012
Whoops...wrong on Iowa being confirmed.

JimmytheRed - February 1, 2012
Can we start ovesigning then?
I wouldn’t mind that. A 4 years scholly is pretty valuable.
meatybob - February 1, 2012
Apprently
we can oversign max 3 with B1G permission per recruit.
JimmytheRed - February 1, 2012
I do wonder if all of this is to combat the oversigning advantages of the SEC
But a good step in the right direction. I like it.
meatybob - February 1, 2012
I don't understand how Florida State signs a top 5 recruiting class every year
But still sucks!
Billgrip - February 1, 2012
Ask Notre Dame's coaches for the last 23 years.
They seemed to have mastered the technique.
Andy Ketterson - February 1, 2012
Yet another reason why...
I do not put much stock into the grading systems. A lot of them are arbitrary and aggravating.
CCE718 - February 1, 2012
Amen
Huskerinthedesert - February 1, 2012
All my friends
give me crap about NU never having a stand out class every year.
Yet my response: We still make every team nervous, and how would you feel if we did get a top 5 class every year???? They seem to stop talking and just buy the next round!
Huskerinthedesert - February 1, 2012
During the dark times...
We had higher rated classes, that didn’t do so well for us then. I am at peace with the fact that it seems Pelini tries to find the players that will fit in his system, cylinder pegs for circle holes and square pegs for square holes, rather than just grabbing a kid because he is 5 stars. In Bo and Tom I trust!

So What are Your Thoughts On The Class So Far?
Peat & Valentine still to come…..but it looks like we have a solid class already.
UltimaRatioRegum - February 1, 2012
Looks great, actually
I don’t know why so many haters are ripping Bo and Company for this class (and by haters, I mean the comment sections at OWH). By all accounts, he has a decent number of 3* kids and a few big recruits. If he lands Peat and Valentine, he’s around 18, and every one of them looks to be a good fit for need at the moment. Of course, I’m often an optimist on signing day, so I could be wrong.
KennardHusker - February 1, 2012
I think its the lack of a shutdown CB
, losing Devin Fuller. I think its mostly the CB thing, we offered like 124 CB’s scholarships and I don’t think we’ve signed one yet. People tend to forget that our some of our best DB’s the last few years have been a converted running back and two ATHs.
The Silver Sky - February 1, 2012
We just need Charles Jackson to qualify
He’s a very talented 4 star recruit from last year and could play right away next year…heck, he probably would have played this year if he had qualified academically, especially when Dennard was hurt.
Billgrip - February 1, 2012
I Personally Have a Love-Hate Relationship With Recruiting
Seems like lots of programs do just fine taking what recruiters consider average players and creating an above average team (look at Bill Snyder for one) while there are a multitude of examples of 5 star laden programs that wallow in mediocrity (all together everyone – smile and shout: “TEXAS”!).
So I hate it that so much energy is emptied into such an arbitrary system.
But I love it when we land the big guys……who doesn’t?
Sigh
UltimaRatioRegum - February 1, 2012
Raymond Ford
I’ve seen a few places that have him off the list…including this article. I haven’t seen him sign with anyone yet and rivals still has him as undecided. Whats up?
Conspiracy* - February 1, 2012
Supposedly he has gone in a another direction
But who really knows till he announces?
Andy Ketterson - February 1, 2012
Who is your favorite commit so far?
I am liking both the Westerkamp and Cross. I think both will greatly help our offense, possibly even this fall.
CCE718 - February 1, 2012
Not sold on Westerkamp
is he really that big a land? I’ve been following Michael Rose for about a month now…I am so excited to have him on the team. His attitude is contaigious. I am going to buy a michael rose jersey first chance I get.
Conspiracy* - February 1, 2012
From what I have heard...
Westerkamp will be one of the better WRs we have gotten in a while. A family member who follows this stuff closer than I do compared him to Swift and I liked Swift a lot. Cross is a much needed complement to our speedy RBs from last year’s class. Don’t get me wrong, love the Rose pick up. Much needed LB. I just am happy to see more weapons for the offense.
CCE718 - February 1, 2012
The Westerkamp/Swift comparisons are also apt..
..in that, like Swift, some people question the level of high school competition and won’t be truly sold on Westerkamp until he gets it done at the Big 10 level.
Andy Ketterson - February 1, 2012
Watched some video at huskers.com
Either the competition was weak in the video or the kid made some good DBs look very bad.
CCE718 - February 1, 2012
Actually, I change my mind
Just watched the video of Armstrong there. Wow! Dude is athletic and has a nice release on the ball. He might be my favorite. Going to watch the Rose video next.
CCE718 - February 1, 2012
Michael Rose
May not play much this fall or at all, but the kid has heart!
Westerkamp and Cross are also both great additions…I think that Westerkamp/Bell would be a receiver combination that any team would love to have, plus Turner as a wildcard.
McMullen and Thurston are both beasts and will help the DL’s and OL’s right away.
Billgrip - February 1, 2012
Other than Peat...
I try to not get excited about OL recruits. I was super happy about Andrew Rodriguez a few years ago…not panning out as expected.
Conspiracy* - February 1, 2012

18 i believe.

you seen that guy on Futurama? You really want that in your locker room?
Jon Johnston - February 1, 2012
We did offer to Bender...
But apparently only as a DB. He wanted the chance to compete for QB, but apparently we’re stock full of QBs that already have a sub 60% completion rate. Besides, we already gave our mandatory in-State Single scholarship out to Sam Cotton!
I mean, why give out two scholarships to two different kids from NE? That’d be down right crazy! We cannot do that! There’s just not enough talent in State to be giving these things away so freely! Why would we ever want to give scholarships out to two Lincoln kids?
Let’s just make all the kids from NE be walk-ons!

Stanford has a recent great tradition of developing o-linemen.
Sadly we probably never as long as Barney is here.
nateforchiefs - February 1, 2012
Honestly
I’d have probably chosen Stanford as well. By choosing Stanford you’re picking a program that’s riding a little higher than Nebraska’s right now, you’re choosing nicer weather (although its not SoCal), and above all, you’re choosing an Ivy League-level education.
It’s hard for me to be mad about that last reason in particular. Still sucks though, I’d give my left nut to have consistently good offensive line play again.
jdhusker - February 1, 2012
Ya...How can you not choose stanford?
Great education, which I hear he is big on, an up and coming coach, and a tradition of developing good OL. I understand the pull to Nebraska but often times kids want to step out of their big brothers shadow.

Maybe moving to the big ten hurt recruiting? Granted, need more time to be sure, but, well…

meh
if they’re going to create new helmets then go friggin’ create new helmets. This didn’t take much thought going into it, did it?
Jon Johnston - February 1, 2012
Probably not.
It was on the BTN site, so I thought I would share for comment here in case others don’t follow that site or twitter. I like the idea, but not necessarily the execution.
JimmytheRed - February 1, 2012
We should save uniform discussions for when people are done hyperventilating over today's signings.
Anyone else think “signings” is such a weird word to attach to an amateur sport?

Go look at some of the "signees" twitter accts -
“Bout to get dat money”
“getting paid fo sho”

Pelini on small class size:
We feel good about the class size, its not about what you got coming in but whats going out. We generally hold back a few scholarships for the walk on guys and guys currently on the roster that have earned or will earn a scholarship. Paraphrasing of course…

Scout ranks gave Anderson and Seisay 3 stars
ESPN doesn’t even rank them at all!!!!
Therefore, they are suck.
Billgrip - February 1, 2012
Also
ESPN gave Westerkamp 3 stars and Avery Moss 2 stars. They didn’t rank Corey Whitaker or Leroy Anderson…
Whitaker kind of fell through the cracks because he transferred schools or something…and after wtaching his highlights I think it’s pretty obvious that he’s got a lot of talent.
So…yeah. I honestly could care less what ESPN has to say about this class now.
Billgrip - February 1, 2012
Keep in mind those are based on volume.
Acg score/recruit probably moves us up with six 4-stars
Andy Ketterson - February 1, 2012
True...
We are in rivals top 25 with only 17 recruits.
Average stars/recruit at 3.35 would put us 17th.
Miami signed 33 kids this year!

Salt Creek and Stadium - February 1, 2012
For the QB?
Are you talking about Armstrong? Really?
I dunno, I would say losing Peat with so many good Nebraska ties is bad. Yes, I realize that Stanford is a great school, but Stanford loses out on smart, good players all the time. Its not like they only offer kids with 36 ACT scores. Stanford takes kids all the time with 27s, 28s for athletic scholarships, and other schools keep them away. For simplicities sake, I am just going to go ahead and blame Cotton.
meatybob - February 1, 2012
Yes, let's condemn the rest of the class and the coaching staff for one 18 year old's decision.
That’s rational.
Salt Creek and Stadium - February 1, 2012
So a coach like Urban Meyer is able to recruit 5* kids based off of the randomness of 18 year old decisions.
Coaches are paid millions to land players like Peat. And I highly doubt that saying the staff should get blame for missing on Peat counts as condemning “the rest of the class and the coaching staff”.
meatybob - February 1, 2012
Yes.
Urban Meyer has ESPN sucking at his teets. It’s kind of hard for young kids to want to go play for him.
Salt Creek and Stadium - February 1, 2012
Urban Meyer is also a scumbag when recruiting.
That does help.
When Jevan Snead committed to Florida, Meyer promised he wouldn’t recruit other QB’s. A few weeks later, a Tim Tebow high school game was on TV & Meyer was there with his OC in the stands. Snead’s dad called him after to ask him what the hell. Supposedly, Meyer told hm wth a straight face that they were looking at Tebow as a LB, so Snead’s dad decomitted him on the spot. The story was in Bruce Feldman’s “Meat Market”
I read another recruiting biogrpaphy about a lesser player, 2 star RB out of Chicago, when Meyer was at Bowling Green & it painted him in about the same light, tell them what they want to hear and if someone better comes along, don’t pick up the phone.
I know some will say that’s the way the game is. Maybe, but only because assholes like Meyer make it that way. Say what you will about Pelini, a regular refrain from recruits is that he in staff are straight up with them & their families.
Andy Ketterson - February 1, 2012
All that being said,
I think he made the right call on Tebow over Snead
brutus1382 - February 1, 2012
The right call, yes.
The right way, no.
If you ever want to see Urban turn pale, wait till the Big 10 goes to multi-year scholarships. Urban’s long in the habit of washing his hands of a kid that can’t be useful.
Andy Ketterson - February 2, 2012
Ohio State is already going to 4 year scholarships...
Salt Creek and Stadium - February 2, 2012

JimmytheRed - February 1, 2012
i don't get
what they mean by probation… this is poorly reported…. so – what constitutes a probation violation? Not having your license with you when you buy beer, or what?
Jon Johnston - February 1, 2012
From what I understand, it's a "ok, we're REALLY watching you now" kind of thing
Probation itself isn’t a punishment. But, if you commit any further NCAA transgressions while on probation, you get hit with “repeat offender” and other such labels, and whatever penalties you would get from the subsequent rule-breaking become much harsher.
Wolvie - February 1, 2012
Which is stupid
It’s the most high minded NCAA violation this side of Mark Richt paying his coaches’ bowl bonuses out of his own pocket when UGA balked.
jdhusker - February 1, 2012
Exactly. We were naughty so the NCAA is letting us know that they know that we were naughty once so now they're going to watch us really closely for a little while.
Whilst continuing to ignore the SEC except when players sell t-shirts on eBay.
Salt Creek and Stadium - February 1, 2012
For friggin' books.

jdhusker - February 1, 2012
I Just Pulled Up Scout.com's Rankings
Nebraska checks in at.…drumroll, please………………50!!!!
How pissed off should I be about this??
Section 37 - February 1, 2012
Not pissed
Remember, this was going to be a small class from the beginning, and recruiting services tend to base their rankings more on quantity than quality.
As for scout…they gave Zaire Anderson (#1 Juco LB in the country) and Mo Seisay (#3 Juco DB in the country) three stars. Apparently they just saw juco by them and slapped on three stars. Don’t bother checking ESPN either…neither of those guys are ranked at all.
At the end of the day, we filled almost every need we had for this class with legitimate talent. The only complaint was not signing a quality corner besides Seisay, but one of the athletes, Alonzo Moore is going to be a corner and he definitely has the size and tools to be a great corner with proper coaching. Also Braylon Heard is likely moving to CB now to add more depth there.
Rivals is a better recruiting service overall and we are 24th there and 17th in average star ranking. Also, Bo said that this is probably the most talented group of walk-ons (19 of them). Don’t forget that walk-ons were the lifeblood of many of the greatest Husker teams.
Billgrip - February 1, 2012
Agree
Being unsure about Peat, Pelini covered the base with Whitaker, who appears to be the classic senior bloomer who wasn’t on recruiting radars at age 16.
As as stated, Ford & Shelton didn’t work, but Seisay & Moore are plenty along with the Heard move, and Cross fills Heard’s spot and spreads the RB schollies a little instead of having 3 tied up in one class.
What is underrated here is the fact that Ward and Okafor chose not to play an additional year thus opening two more spots up. Otherwise, we may have had to knock one and possibly two off this list (if one spot is being held for Jackson).
Andy Ketterson - February 1, 2012
I don't think
that JUCO players are ever rated with stars. They’re kind of not considered in the rankings – at least that’s what I understand about all this.
Jon Johnston - February 1, 2012
They are rated
But they can lag way behind at times. I believe Seisay was 4 stars and Anderson was 3.
Andy Ketterson - February 2, 2012
ESPN recruiting insiders suck
I listened to one downgrade a kid from 4 stars to 3 stars a year or two ago, because he had ONE bad drill at the Under-Armour All-American Game practice. 4 years of actual games and his performance the rest of that week was not even really mentioned when they talked about him. (Wish I could remember who it was to further rub it in their face.)
Rivals is the only one I really pay attention to in terms of Rankings. I just look at ESPN everyone in a while to see if they have any new verbal commits before Rivals.
