2012 National Title Game: Alabama vs LSU - The Open Thread

We've arrived at the final destination for the 2011 football season, although it's a destination most of us have little or no desire to see - it's pretty certain there will be plenty who won't even get off the train to take a look at the place.

The LSU Tigers take on the Alabama Crimson Tide for the 2011 National Title. I know you're as thrilled as I am. I realize there are plenty of you who won't be watching this game as some sort of protest - you can still stop by and say hello and talk about whatever else you want.

If you're wondering who to root for, Spencer Hall has all the information you need to know. As for me, I'll be rooting for LSU, because the thought of Nick Saban and Alabama winning another national title sickens me more than if it were Les Miles.

Plus, Loooosiiana > Alabama in terms of a place I might think about living some day.

The thrilling is just oozing out of me, isn't it....?

I am watching this game

for one reason only: to see who wins the CN Bowl Pickem contest.

It's down to only

two possible winners, bliss and tbrigg. If Bama wins, bliss wins…LSU, then it’s tbrigg. No one else has a shot to win the shiny new big-screen TV.

I'm watching

but my eyes are burning.

I wonder if Bo

is thinking, “Darn, I could be on that LSU sideline”.

Eh

He’s already got a ring. Plus he’s building his own thing here.

Just wondering

if the old softie might be a little nostalgic.

Glad he’s here.

Bo? Nostalgic?

Not part of the process.

To him, he’s always been the Nebraska head coach. Getting ready for the next game is his focus. :)

/Looks at the calendar to see when that is

//…haz sad

at scouts

For another hour

Maybe someone,,

could actually get a TD in this one??

I wouldn't count on it
I'd say

everyone must drink for each TD, but that would make this the most sober game thread in the history of CN.

No gin.
Gin

until Jon gets back from Scouts. THEN no gin.

hey!
Pay attention

to your Scout meeting.

horse collar???
This could be it!
But they still have

26 yards to go…..

Cue the missed FG
Geaux Tigers!

But they’re off to a kinda shaky start…

Richardson is something special.

I wish I could run into the back of my o line like he does.

And the

field goal fest begins. Bama 3-0.

Oh, I bet that kicker feels better that he made that one.
Fest?

Are you implying that these offenses are capable of getting into range a significant number of times?

dearth...void...lack...
How about Field Goal Scavenger Hunt?
Kudos to Westerkamp to sticking with Nebraska.

You won’t regret it! Lincoln > South Bend.

Then again, he probably already knew that.

That was great news today.
Anytime Nebraska can stick it to Notre Dame, Salt is a happy camper.
Yeah

We typically don’t win recruiting battles against them. That said, I’d put alot more money on Pelini still being here in 4 years than Kelly being at ND. Another 5 losses next year and his fanny will be firmly on the hotseat.

Especially battles over Catholic-raised Illinoisians.

I’m fairly confident it’s already written into Kelly’s contract that he’ll be ousted at four years (so Skip Holtz can return them to the promised land) to go take a job as a SEC offensive coordinator and then become TCU’s head coach.

So that's

what those “Catholics Come Home” commercials are REALLY about. Bastards!

I should state that I'm maintaining my boycott of the Battle for the Unicorn Trophy.
Went to the kitchen to start supper.

Did I miss anything? (sarcastic)

That's worth a LOL.
That looked

like the Huskers…clean shot at the QB, he gets away.

Ok, I'll give them that one

Hell of a catch. The fact that it was on “Honey Badger” makes it all the better.

There's been three

great receptions by Bama players tonight.

Somebody

might wanna cover Smelley every now and then.

Wait there's another Kenny Bell out there?

Or did ours sneak into this game?

Bet our

Kenny’s hair is more magnificent

Cmon Bama

Try the field goal! I haven’t laughed yet tonight. :(

Skycams have teh worst view of the field.
But the greatest

potential to kill someone.

To me that looks short on replay
Very generous spot.
OOH, smack. Ouch!
Call me a candy ass who's trying to ruin the game

But that looked like a 15 yarder there.

THERE'S the Alabama ST play we've come to love!
What happened?
Blocked FG.
LSU blocked it.
Yay!
So Saban is playing "100 ways to kick a field goal"?
Next up:

Doinking it off the skycam.

I would sit and watch that GIF for hours.
Especially if Nick Saban face follows.
The Tide's a-rollin' on this drive.
You wonder

About fatigue. LSU’s offense has been pathetic so far. Maybe one drive that wasn’t a 3 and out?

So LSU is fatigued? Or just drawing Alabama in?
Ah, those sneaky suckers.
True

Necessary reminder: Georgia looked far more dominant than this in the 1st half of the SEC title game, should’ve led by 3 td’s at halftime, and ended up losing by like 30.

Yeah.

One 1st down to 10.

Yeah, 10-1 on first downs.

Half-time can’t come soon enough for the LSU D.

Oh look,,,a FG!!!
is this the quietest game ever?

or does it just seem that way?

What is there to yell about?
Lack of offense!
Ha! I should have said "cheer about".
Might be time for Lee.
glad

i missed a bunch of this due to a scout meeting

Bama's pitcher has been amazing today.

12 K’s so far in the 5th inning

Wow Bama's gonna get another field goal try

Emphasis on “try” as its about 40 yards out.

another

one – LSU has their work cut out for them.

I don’t think I could stand another Nick Saban national title.

It's good.

Alabama 9 LSU 0 Halftime.

They found a way to make it suck more than the first

All the flaws of the first one, minus the drama.

Maybe Miles needs to eat some turf,

to get the mojo going!!

shit

think I pulled a muscle in my back – ill-timed sneeze.

Ice it for ten minutes.
He doesn't want a cold nose.
I say

put Lee in for a series or two. It couldn’t hurt the offense.

I don't know these rosters.

I take it Lee is the LSU backup QB?

which was quite apparent from your comment, duh. : )
He played

bunch while Jefferson was suspended.

Really?

Field goals for the halftime show too?

this could

be more exciting than the game – this dude kicking FGs

How ironic is it that

the halftime contest involves field goals?

Sucks...

They didn’t even reset the ball for him!

The two

scholarship guys can’t even make them from 40 yards.

Bama dude

pretty upset -

Ya feel bad for him...

but reminds me again why CFB > NFL.

Amen.

It’s the true passion of the players that makes it great.

ROLL TIDE!

back to back nice plays!

I'm so glad they've talked up Honey Badger for 2 months now

and he has been beat on.

Honey Badger dont give a shit!
yup

I imagine at some point we’re all gonna get sick of the nickname

if you aren’t already

but I still

love the video.

Funny how that name can be used so many different ways...

While I was in Madison we were on the prowl for a whole nother kind of “honey badger”.

For everyones info

The ref who tripped on that long run is the same guy who flagged Pelini after Bo called him a “cocksucker” in the A&M game.

damn

come on, LSU

spare us another field goal
And we now have four,

count ’em, 4 field goals…Bama 12-0.

You have to think

That all these field goals comes back to bite ‘Bama. Isn’t there some kind of football karma that kicks in, a la Nebraska’s 09 games vs VT and Texas?

Not if they

keep doing what they’re doing. LSU looks bad on both sides of the ball tonight.

yeah

unless LSU does something pretty soon, this one’s over.

Bama goes 5-7 next year?
There hasn't

been a turnover in this game, has there?

Don't think so.
My wife:

WTF is a honey badger?!

Which answer are you going to give her?

The video one, or the one’s from your ill-spent youth?

I said Matheiu is the color of honey

and hes ferocious like a badger. She said that’s dumb.

And Madison was just three months ago. Don’t worry I was the wingman, just acquiring targets not taking any down myself.

OMG

A FIRST DOWN!

LSU just picked up more yards on that one play,

than they’ve had all game,,LOL

TEBOWTIME.
I loveloveloved

that OT pass yesterday.

I just like the fact that everyone says how superior the NFL is to college football...

And thanks to Tebow, we can now see that the college offense is FAR more exciting and rewarding.

Well,,,not in this game anyway!
Are you kidding?

NFL coaches are getting really excited right now!

Honestly...

OkSt would have atleast 30 points right now.

that's a fair catch signal?

that’s pretty weak.

Too bad, LSU had them stuffed on the 10

It wan't like he hit him with a vengeance either.

That would have been a good no call.

McCarron is on point tonight.
he is

nice looking quarterback.

guess I haven’t watched ‘Bama much this year, but it’s not like I’d go out of my way…..

LSU needs a strip,pick, something.

But that may not even do it.

Turrible option pitch.
Dam,,,LSU sucks with the option!!!
Jordan Jefferson

sucks. a lot.

Funniest turnover of the year award.
The possible

broken leg makes it a little less funny.

I had it typed before I saw the injury..

now you made me feel bad. But not really.

Meh

He’ll live.

Idk dude

Tajh Boyd and Tommy Rees would dispute that claim.

Oh yes I remember Boyd's now.

If Clemson was actually as relevant as they thought they were it could probably win the award.

WTF was that!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh my.

Dat was stupid.

looks like

Mosely tore his knee up when Jefferson tackled him

Hopefully not as bad as originally looked...

But hes done.

I am reminded of the

SNL skit in 1976 in which Mr Mike did an impression of what it would look like if someone took knitting needless and plunged them into the eyes of Tony Orlando and Dawn.

http://snltranscripts.jt.org/75/75umrmike.phtml

Well Bama misses another field goal

But man, their offense has looked bad.

(LSUs, that is)
zzzzzzzzzzz

Bama misses a FG.

Screen passed are dumb 99% of the time

they are called.

*passes. My typing is more off tonight than the Tiger O!
especially

when they know they’re coming. that one took about as long as it could have possibly taken.

That Lacy is a load.
LSU's defense looks spent

Probably just as much emotionally as physically.

if Jordan Jefferson

comes out at quarterback again, it’s gonna be clear that Les Miles hates all of us much more than I thought possible.

So is it the

gloriou SEC defensive speed that makes this game so amazing?

Apparently the lights are just too bright.

The SEC has got to be wishing Oklahoma State had been offered up as the fatted calf to SEC dominance.

I'm sure

LSU is wishing that.

These may be the two best teams...

But this game would be so much more interesting if it were Oklahoma State/LSU or Bama

or a bunch of weiner dogs

wearing flags and fighting for a piece of steak.

Bama has spectacular kick coverage

I hope our special teams coordinator is watching…

Send a copy of the video to Ross Els
woohooo!

it’s the fourth quarter!

and yet we've made it this far

without one Smelley joke. And Musberger has set them up so well.

So I missed it

Is this Shelly guy (Bama’s kicker) the same guy who derped in the first game?

I believe

That he’s their short range kicker and that their long range kicker absorbed most of the misses in the first game. Not sure though, I’ll check.

How pathetic is it that some teams need both kickers?
Very
When you sign 45 recruits every year...

you can afford to have two kickers.

That's the thing...

They must be the absolute WORST at finding kickers.

We went into Florida and got Bondi, who by accounts is a fairly serviceable kicker.

And even if he isn’t, I’m sure we can root out another walk-on from Omaha or Lincoln who played soccer for four years in high school.

Yep

Foster (their long range kicker) was 1/4.
Shelley was 1/2.

Miles

is riding Jefferson to the end, it looks like.

if Jefferson's

gonna stay in the game, he’s gonna have to win it.

and by that – get his team going. right now they just should down the damned ball and punt. lifeless, no energy.

So is this

The worst title game of all time? All the warts of the original matchup without the decency to be a competitive matchup this time around.

that's a pretty apt description

worst title game….. it might be. I’m not coming up with anything worse.

The 13-2 OU-FSU in 2001 was close

But that wasn’t a freaking rematch of a 9-6 game.

Oh way to bring that up Brent!
That was a hell of a Miami team

And a pretty “meh” Nebraska team. Not unlike 2001.

Still ESPN would never miss a chance to bash Neb
No bash, just looking for the most apt comparison.

That would be it.

omg

that was an exciting hit on the quarterback.

Officially SICK of the Honey Badger!!!!!!!!!!
I didn't count but...

I’m pretty sure Musburger just said Honey Badger about 73 times in one minute

because honey badger fears no man!
It's seriously

The most irritating nickname in recent memory.

I was okay with it the first 5,000 times I heard it

It’s just the 20,000 times since that have made it quite annoying

Damn

“LSU fails to cross the 50” would’ve made an excellent talking point for how wretched this game was.

Musburger is bad at math

“I promised people touchdowns tonight and look at this, 4 field goals”

Umm…
15/3=5

Jefferson not run the option decisively?

After 3 quarters of this game I find this hard to believe.

wtf was that?????

what the hell

well

his back was being held. that should have been called PI

They basically have to go for it here.
Laugh if you will,

but I’m finding a new appreciation for offense.

/ Nebraska's offense.
This game is over,,,

and has really SUCKED!!!

As if we didn't know 30 minutes ago

Game over.

okay

this is done.

bloody awful game, horrid LSU offense.

That's the game

Glad I picked Bama in my pick em’ groups…and I put 30 points on it in one. I knew they’d win.

Technically they didn't finish a drive past the 50.
We should have

stuck to our promise of boycotting this game.

I think this outcome is good though

It clouds the “true champion” question and has been sufficiently unentertaining that an all-SEC crapfest like this probably won’t happen again sans a playoff.

I'll drink to that.
I wonder if Nielsen can tell...

at what point I chose to watch How its Made: Paperclips over the BCS national championship game.

Congratulations to bliss,

winner of the CN Pickem contest.

I'm glad this isn't even close

Bama is clearly the better team, and they should have won the first game. This leaves no room for debate as to who is #1.

Also, LOL at the mom who embarassed her son on national TV the other night for picking Bama over LSU because “LSU’s #1! GEAUX TIGERS!” She’s probably crying about now and I hope her son doesn’t call her on her birthday next year, or send a mother’s day card.

hey

did you get that email I sent you?

No I didn't

Did you send it to my gmail? (billgrip@gmail.com)

no

I’ll send another one

Hey,,,a TOUCHDOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OH MY GOD!!!!!

Was that a TOUCHDOWN??????

And of course

Bama shanks the PAT.

And they miss the pat,,Hahahahaha!!
Remind me

because I don’t even care enough to look it up. But who was Bama’s big non-conference win?

Penn State?
NO SIR.

IT WAS GEORGIA SOUTHERN.

A noted powerhouse

That got rocked by Houston just as badly.

Yeah, in light of all that happened though

I’d say they (Penn State) were a lot tougher at the beginning of the year.

Don't screw with my narrative

It’s been a rough night. :P

That game was probably PSU’s single most impressive showing of the year, though. Actually I take that back, it definitely was. Nothing else was even close.

That game against Houston was pretty bad

I remember reading a tweet from one of the PSU players after being selected to play Houston that said something along the lines of “We might as well been picked to play against the local high school JV squad.”

From then on I knew they would lose that game. Houston was a really good team this year.

Yea the 14-10 win against Temple is impressive.
That's pretty much the point I was trying make.
Has there been any flags in this game??
I remember

one or two offsides.

7 procedural flags on LSU

I believe that’s the extent of them.

Imagine how much LSU fans HATE Jordan Jefferson right now
First flag on Bama
OOH, a tirade

by Saban. Quick, throw that up on YouTube.

HE'S A BLACK EYE FOR ALABAMA.
Good night all!
Me too.

This absolutely stunk…stank…blew.

See you all on a BB thread.

We're playing Penn State

That’s basically the basketball equivalent of what we just watched. ;)

Have a good one!

And no, Brent, Saban isn't the next Bear Bryant

More like Bud Wilkinson.

Discuss this...

I said last night that I didn’t agree with the rematch and that if the regular season is so important that we can’t have a playoff, then I can’t really take this game seriously.

But Alabama has dominated this game. Do I change my mind and go with Alabama, or stick with my principles?

Stick with your principles!!
Brent is telling you right now.

He says you can’t turn down the Tide…so, there ya go. ; D

Just pick Oklahoma State.

We need some ROOLLLTYDE trolls passing through here.

i like that idea
It's hard

LSU’s resume is still far more impressive. On the other hand this was a dominant performance and Alabama is pretty clearly the better team.

Hell with it, I’d probably keep LSU at #1 on the basis that they had more wins, more impressive wins, and beat Alabama on their home turf while Bama’s win (inflated by LSU giving up late) happened on what was a nominally neutral field.

I have always been (and remain) staunchly opposed to a full playoff, but this is a crap sandwich and something has to change.

Oregon stands out to me as their only impressive win.
And West Virginia, and Arkansas, and Georgia.
Well

at West Virginia (yeah, yeah, Big East, they still won a BCS bowl) by 26
at Alabama
vs Arkansas (11-2) by 24
Georgia (neutral) by 35

That’s 5 wins that are (imo) are very to extremely high quality.

I'm still not convinced by any of those.

Looking at each of those teams schedules and results, it seems mediocre. I’m having a hard time finding anything decisive for any team this year.

I think you said it best with crap sandwich for this year.
Nobody can make me gag like Musberger
For some reason this seems like the most unexciting national championship victory I've ever seen

Seriously, Saban barely smiled in the interview, the players really don’t seem that enthusiastic…at least compared to what I’ve seen in other years

I suspect they're stunned at how crappily (it appears to me) LSU played.
And Saban never smiles.

He only smiles when he medical redshirts another underperforming scholarship player.

Well

Here’s hoping this is a turning point in the sentiment toward the current BCS system among the powers that be (public sentiment turned a long time ago). Then at least we can look back and say that some good came out of this debacle.

Somehow this will be spun to say "THE BCS GOT IT RIGHT".

And the only thing that will change is they’ll drop the auto-qualifiers, making it that much easier for SEC teams to make it into the top bowl games.

They will only take notice

If it hits their pocketbooks. I’ll be interested to see what the ratings are.

So

I read a book instead of watching this game. I feel like the book was more interesting based on everyone’s opinions. Glad I didn’t support this BCS suck-fest. :)

LSU looked like a team forced to play a rematch

like Neb vs. OU in 78 (somewhere around there), FSU and UF in 1996, same here. Really unfair to LSU to have to play this game again, and the uninspired result happens.

Boy, Jefferson looked lost out there.
